Hugh Mackey

About: Hi, I'm Hugh Mackey, and I'm a writer and videographer living in Brooklyn. In my writing, I aim to create stories that work simultaneously on multiple levels. I've always been interested in the way tales from different worlds can offer us insights into our own. That shift in perspective, that view from a hypothetical place, is still as powerful and full of interesting potential as when I was a child. But as much as I like a good high-concept, I never want it to come at the expense of a solid dramatic core and an experience for the reader that is not merely interesting, but which is emotionally engaging and exciting. This isn't homework, after all, and the only reason you'll ever have to turn the page is that you want to.

Many of my works on this site are shorter than most of what I've done, and they include some of my experiments: attempts to go out of my comfort zone and try a different format or narrative structure. They all have something about them that I love, and hopefully they still all meet my broader aim of capturing the heart and mind in equal measure.
